The U.S. Department of Education announced today the hiring of the first ever open education adviser to lead a national effort to expand schools’ access to high-quality, openly-licensed learning resources.
Today, U.S. PIRG, along with a broad coalition of 91 education organizations, institutions of higher education, technology companies, and foundations called on the White House to ensure federally funded educational materials are made freely available to the public as the administration develops an Open Government Partnership plan this fall.
A report released today by the Student PIRGs shows that an alternative textbook model called open textbooks could save undergraduate students more than a billion dollar a year.

Marylanders are driving less these days, according to a report by the Maryland PIRG Foundation, a public interest research group.
"Given these trends, we need to press the reset button on our transportation policy," Guy said. "Just because past transportation investments overwhelmingly went to highway construction doesn't mean that continues to be the right choice for Maryland's future."
You may not notice it from your daily commute but Marylanders are driving less. Marylanders have cut their per-person driving miles by 4 percent since 2005, according to a new report from the Maryland PIRG Foundation. The decline mirrors a national trend. Across the U.S., 45 states have reduced per-person driving since 2005, the report said.
